The Buchanan High School Choral music program was founded when the school opened in the fall of 1991. At that time, construction of the high school campus was under way so that first year of 9th graders and the following year of 9th and 10th graders met on the campus of Alta Sierra Middle School. In the fall of 1993 the high school campus officially opened but since the performing arts building wasn’t quite finished, the first choir room was room 316 in the math wing of the academic building. In December, the choirs finally got to move to their permanent (and much more spacious) room 401 in the Performing Arts building.

Roger Bergman, the choir’s founder and current director, oversees a program that has grown from a handful of students in a couple of groups to six choirs involving almost two hundred students as well as an advance placement music theory class and beginning piano class.

Among the many events and performances involving the Choirs at Buchanan, they have also participated in festivals in Orlando, Washington D.C, and twice in New York. The Concert Choir performed at the California Music Educators Association Convention in Sacramento in 2002 and the Chamber Singers performed at the similar event in 2007. Buchanan choirs have consistently received superior ratings at choral festivals and they continue to perform in concerts and events for the local community as well as throughout the state.
